Grand Isle, La. State Park Surf Fishing!
We went to surf fish at the State Park in Grand Isle, La. because the bridge to the beach at Port Fourchon is being repaired. We fished the beautiful beach here a few years ago and we were totally shocked at what we found Saturday.
The big, wide, long coastal beach area that was here is eroded away to the back beach bushes. The tiny area that is left is limited to tent camping only. The fee here in the overnight area is 10 dollars. The small spots are so close together if two people want to fish you have to cross lines with other anglers! The narrow road to the handful of spots past the ones in the photo is a sand trap and a "soft sand" warning sign is posted. No room for RV's anymore, they park back behind the levee near the shower and restroom facilities. The area we are parked in is shown in the photo below. On the State Park map below, this exact spot is shown by a red X. The park map you get on entry "below" still shows the beach as it was, the point out in the water where I took this photo used to be picnic tables.

All the beach camping and picnic table area outlined in red is gone now. It is also gone past the fishing pier to Barataria pass! I turned to the right (east) and took the photo below! We could only see as far as the fishing pier to the east, in the photo below you can see the pier to the east, all water and no state park beach anymore, it is eroded away back to the migratory bird nesting areas too. The vanishing coastline of our state is in serious trouble.
