Verreault Website: Cast Net Secrets! Referred by: Lycos From: Fort Worth, Texas Time: 1998-09-29 20:59:31 Comments: I was born in Gulfport, MS. My mother's family lives there. My grandfather made a cast net he was using since at least the early '60s. After he died in '83, my grandmother told me he made it from the plans in an old book. For all I know, the one on your page may be it. I learned to throw his; you definitely needed some upper body strength to throw it! I find the lightweight nets easy to cast, but I like the character of that old net. When my grandmother passed away this June, I gave the net to my cousin. I've been looking for plans just such as this. I'll let you know if I have any luck building one. ****(Probably is the same book, I got it in the early 60's at a hardware on the riverfront in the French Market in New Orleans called "Lanasa's" Hardware! I still have a small hand made cotton net that I bought there, I was too young to drive and I remember taking the old round public busses down there! Good Luck!!, BOB!!****) |

Also baits for reds, trout, flounder include gold and silver spoons, grubs, and rattle traps. If you happen to drop one of these in the bottom of the boat you don't get that smell a few days later that you'd get with cut mullet or shrimp. Anyway, save the shrimp for a boil. |

Surf Fishing Team! Website: Bertaut Sports Tackle Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: 30 X 90 Time: 1998-09-23 23:18:49 Comments: The Louisiana Surf Fishing Team fished the remaining half of Fourchon Public Beach this morning (WED)! The past weeks storms have washed away most of the remaining sand that was pumped in in 1990, there are some old, long, tack welded rusted pipes exposed from when they did that. They are exposed at various spots along the length of the beach to the west of the barges. We could not access the 7 miles to the east, the gulf storms are opening several cuts about a mile east of the barges that go directly to Bay Champagne and may threaten all the camps over there. Large, rusted iron sections of the 12 breakwater barges are now gone too. Some of the underwater structure (the first and second sandbars and troughs) were coming back after being swept away flat! Hope we get lucky with the approaching storms! We caught 2 Tope Sharks, Ladyfish, and a Giant Stingray! October last year was the last time we got trout off the beach, who knows whats in store now! Fish photos and a couple other anglers with a shark photos will be in the "Fishing Photos Section" on the front page tomorrow night! Hope all stay dry! Fish Forever, BB-1 & BB-2 |

These J8J's are definately a hotter plug and can be casted a long way, but the top of the line for distance and price is this QL77CC of which I always have six on hand. Wait a minute, this is my Seabrook Bridge tackle box, I must be going crazy from not fishing for a week. Well I guess thats what happens when Mother Nature decides to throw us a curve right when the fishing gets hot, will be back on them this coming week if Mother allows.......CAPT. (Don't say that on an airplane)!! The train trestle bridge across the lake near the twin bridges is the best spot around there, I use to rent a skiff right there and take it out by the train trestles, if they were not biting there I would head for the Rigolets, pass Fort Pike and go 5 miles to to marsh areas around Lake Borgne!! By the L&N train bridge area!! Hope this helps!)**** |

TIM URSIN Website: ESCAPE CHARTERS Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: SHELL BEACH, LOUISIANA Time: 1998-09-07 03:51:47 Comments: The reds and trout bit well the last couple of days deep in the Biloxi marsh, fished the morning bite on the incoming tide. The mouths of ponds and small lagoons produced good sized eating reds and scrappy trout in the 12 to 16 in. range. The action was fast and consistant until the tide slowed, the marshes around Shell Beach are full of reds and trout, and if your looking for good eating trout this is the time to get them. If you want to target mainly trout, the afternoon on the falling tide is going to be your best bet, look for tide driven points with defined rips and if there's bait there it's a plus. Live bait on a cork is best but but beetles, top water lures and floater diver minnow type lures are also working well. We had a lot of fun with a 3 in. silver green Yozuri today, the trout went wild. By the looks of it the Fall should be fantastic, can't wait.....CAPT.HOOK.....CAMPO'S MARINA ......SHELL BEACH, LA. |

TIM URSIN Website: ESCAPE CHARTERS Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: SHELL BEACH Time: 1998-08-31 21:14:08 Comments: This past week has been nothing short of phenominal in Breton Sound for big trout in the 2 to 5 lb. range, it looks like they're making their rig hopping runs before the cooler weather moves in, which by the looks of it , won't be for a while. They are not in a solid pattern, but are moving and are in a different spot from one day to the next, but the trout are all big. Storm minnows, large cocahos or croakers are working the best under a popping cork about 5 feet deep and live shrimp will work best when freelined with a small split shot. Our best success came on tide ranges of 6 tenths to a foot. After pulling up to a well give it at least a half hour and cast in all directions, if they are anywhere nearby you will be hooked up in no time. Also did some Red fishing trips in the beginning of last week and did really well on Reds in the 18 to 22 inch range, not really big but fun to catch and even better to eat, also had plenty of action on trout in the 12 to 14 inch range, this should be an exceptional Fall and Winter in the marshes out of Shell Beach. Good fishing.....Capt. Hook..... Escape Fishing Charters.....Campo's Marina, Shell Beach. |

From: SHELL BEACH, LOUISIANA Time: 1998-08-11 02:40:04 Comments: Five good days in the Bay Eloi and Breton Sound areas this week, live shrimp on a popping cork fished shallow was the bait of choice. Mixed sized trout in Eloi, 12 to 16 ins., but the trout were much nicer on the Sound side, consistent 2 to 4's. The smaller wells in the 5 wells field produced the best, use the rig hook on the incoming tide. We fished redfish on Sat. and had non stop action the entire morning, again live shrimp on a cork was best, the action was best from Proctors Point on down the West shoreline to the fort, a trolling motor works best when working the shoreline....GOOD FISHING....CAPT. Yesterday from surise on the stocked pond (Gulf of Mexico), till 10:30 AM I caught 46 Speckled Trout, 17 were keepers!! The rest get released by my 7 year old fishing partner(they splash him with their tail leaving his hands) ! What a blast, I got strikes and fish all morning!! All on my chrome RangaTang lures, I could have sold a hundred in the water again this weekend, some people actually begged, some said they are gonna outlaw them!!! Of course I loved every minute of it!! I also got 3 White Trout, a Lady, a Whiting (channel mullet), and a Bluefish Saturday! We slept late this morning, (no sleep yesterday) and hit the beach late at 11:00 AM! Still got 15 Speckled Trout by 1:00 PM, (missed the morning run), but out of the ones I picked up in that two hours with the sun overhead 8 were keepers, also got a Stingray and lost him and my lure! Brent Roy Website: Venice Charters Unlimited Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Venice Time: 1998-08-10 01:00:36 Comments: BIG TROUT IN VENICE!!! We've been really tearing up the big trout for the last week in Venice. Yesterday, we had our 9 man limit of beautiful trout, most in the 3 lb range, by noon. Live bait is best right now , but we are also catchin plenty on Plastic once they get going good. The bigger fish have been on the live croakers, though. It looks like it's gonna be one of our best years yet for big Specks in the Venice area. Still plenty of reds, too, down river. Bass fishing has been good late in the afternoon on the falling tide. It's time to come down if you like to catch a lot of Bass. 100 Bass a day is pretty common in the Fall. Big boys in the 4 lb. range, too! Come get in on some of the best Speckled Trout and Bass action anywhere. Call us to make reservations. Overnight accomodations available. Venice Charters Unlimited 504-677-8420. Catch Em' Up!! Capt. TIM URSIN Website: ESCAPE CHARTERS Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: SHELL BEACH, LOUISIANA. Time: 1998-08-04 03:31:35 Comments: Man how things change from week to week, from good weather and steady trout action, to this mess the last couple of days, I guess the winds finally decided to make their appearence. We managed to hang in there today behind the rocks catching plenty of fish, but only one in five were keepers, and they were between 12 and 14 ins. The shrimp we are fishing with are 20, 25's and the trout were having a hard time taking them so we switched to a chartruse double beetle on a cork and would hook-up almost every cast. The water was dirty but the fish were all around the area, the conditions weren't the greatest but everyone had a good time anyway. Not to many options with the high East winds, gonna try to locate them the rest of this week. Last Thursday was was a special treat for me when I fished redfish with Kenny Campo Sr. in the morning, and then went back in the evening with Kenny Jr. We got into some tackle busters on both occasions and caught and released until our arms were sore. We also caught some trout in the 3 to 4 lb. range which was a pleasent surprise, but the capper of the day was a 8.75 lb. sheepshead, which made a kahle hook look like a pretzel. No species of fish has a chance when Kenny Jr. decides to go after them.....CAPT.HOOK...ESCAPE FISHING CHARTERS....CAMPO'S MARINA, SHELL BEACH,LA. |

All you have to do is drive, and you don't need a boat! I am working on a Surf Fishing Book, that will have all that information and much more! I have some folks waiting to sell it too! Time: 1998-07-31 04:45:13 Comments: i had the opportunity to fish 'bird island' near fourchon, by boat with my brother paul and steve matherne of galliano. we fished about 2.5 hours from 6:30am to 9:00am. caught 81 fish, 79 white and speckled trout and 2 bluefish. one keeper speck was retrieved as just a head as it fell prey to the sharks. one of my prized kastmaster lures (w/ chartreuse stripe) was bit off my line probably by a shark. the fish were caught off the bottom with plastic cocahoes (several colors worked), and the fish generally nibbled on the bait before taking the whole thing. fish were also taken on topwater plugs--i cast this into areas of jumping shrimp, with relatively good success. patience was the rule of the day with the fish... bob, i'll send the few photos i took when i get the roll developed; sometime in the 'near future.' |

Lot's of school trout from 12 to 24 inches being caught on the South end of Big Lake. Live Shrimp are the key. Fish them about 18 to 24 inches under a Popping Cork. ( I like the plastic ones with the bee bee's in them, on a 3/0 cahle hook. I caught all of mine on 20 pound Berkley Big Game. Last saturday was a little off because of a slow moving tide, and some wind. But the weekend before we tore em up, at 9-mile cut, and the Jetties. I had some luck under 210 bridge in Prien Lake last week. I went out after work, got there about 6:pm, boated 10 specks, and was back home before dark, all 12 to 15 inches the same way as above. Also fished under the lights with glow cocohoes dipped in "Dip n Glow" Hope this helps, Darryl "Dog" Hebert |

Brent Roy Website: Venice Charters Unlimited Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Venice Time: 1998-07-14 02:46:46 Comments: VENICE CHARTERS UNLIMITED Fishing has been HOT! The redfish have been turning on with the falling tide and hitting Excalibur Spinnerbaits with a vengeance. Ive been finding areas where the clean water is filtering out of the canes and moving along slow with the trolling motor until I find the fish. Then, just anchor up and hold on. Trout are still thick up around Black Bay and at the rigs. Live shrimp or croakers are best, but some fish can still be caught on H&H plastics. Purple/Chrt is still good. Some trout showing up along the beach on the West side, too. Plenty of action offshore . We had some nice Yellowfin Tuna and Bull Dolphin, early this week. We lost a nice Marlin on Tuesday. The Cobia are suicidal right now. I fished them Wed. and had a 3 man limit of 6 fish at the first rig I stopped at. All good fish in the 25-50 lb. range. Plenty of Kings and Snapper ,too. The Tarpon have also shown up. Wednesday, we were in wall to wall Tarpon, everywhere you looked, for a while. Brandon Ballay jumped one off in the 140 range and another boat caught a couple. The weather is Hot, but so is the FISHING!! Some good dates left in August. Book now! Til next week, Catch Em Up! Capt. Brent Roy 504-677-8420 Brent Roy |

TIM URSIN Website: ESCAPE CHARTERS Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: SHELL BEACH, LA. Time: 1998-07-13 23:19:59 Comments: Had a couple of good days in Breton Sound and then came the West winds, and although we managed to catch trout, there were a considerable number of throw backs which kept us in the action. We ended up heading back to the MRGO and fishing the West side bank where a shallow flat would drop off into deep water, and fished a light sliding lead with 20 ins. of leader and did well with the specks and white trout, watch out for ships, they don't slow down, and be ready to pick up your anchor at a moments notice. We moved back into the marshes and caught some decent trout and a few redfish, all on live shrimp under a popping cork. When the wind blows hard and the water gets dirty be prepared to change your tactics and look for cleaner water, it doesn't have to be crystal clear, only clean, with very little floating sediment in it, this is why it's called fishing, you have to adjust and adapt to the conditions thrown at you, so be flexable it will help you put more fish in the boat which will make momma happy, and we all know, when momma's happy we're happy to.....CAPT. I printed the Delacroix map on Chpt. 3&4 and tried out some of the spots marked AND IT WORKED!! The map helps us rookies look good! Check it out! Here is my report: Fished the shore line inbetween Black Bay and Lake Campo July 3rd and 4th. We did pretty well for 1st timers...over 70 trout on the 3rd and 40 on the 4th (avg. size 16"). They turned on around 11:00am each day and took anything we threw...live shrimp, artificial, dead bait (over a year old, found in the back of the freezer). The 4th was a great day made even better because my daughter (all 3 years and 10 months of her) caught her first fish (16" trout) with our last live shrimp on her brand new Zebco 33 rodnreel. She cried the whole time she was reeling, but wouldn't let dad help! When asked why she was crying she said, "He ate my shrimp!" HERE'S TO SCREAMING ZEBCO DRAGS AND DAUGHTERS WHO LIKE TO FISH WITH DAD!! (Glad you like the Map!! I posted a single page condensed version, click on the above map link! Good Luck To All, BOB!!) |

When I got there it was close to low tide and the water was dirty in most places. I tried a few spots where I saw birds diving, but I could not cast far enough. I did catch undersized trout in every spot, so I kept moving to keep from injuring the little fish. Boats fishing the birds were doing great. Finally found some clear water near the barges and fished near a crowd of people. By the time I started fishing the school had been depleted. A few people who had been there a while had close to there limit in 12" to 15" trout. They were using tandem sparkle beetles bouncing off the bottom. I caught a few trout and a spanish mackerel. There were huge schools of all kinds of baitfish everywhere. Also saw shrimp jumping out of the water at the last spot. The fishing will be good all summer when the weather is good. Good luck!! |

I also released one of the spectacular migratory blue and gray seagulls with the black head and red beak last week! (they bite too) When you make a long cast with a chrome spoon the birds think it is a falling baitfish that another bird just dropped and they dive on it and get tangled in the line! and I posted a photo of some fishing friends, Nolan & Debbie and photos that show how to Identify a Tope Shark from a Blacktip! We are limiting out on redfish early and still finding plenty of trout under the birds. Had Billy and Bobby Murray down and got to try out some of their new G-Loomis rods and Shimano Chronarch reels. Incredible equipment. If you fish a lot, like me, you really should invest in some quality equipment like this. Hopefully, I'll be working with Billy's Shimano rep and my customers will be fishing with G-Loomis and Shimano, soon! Anyway, we found reds in the marsh on both sides of the river and tryed some of Pradco's new lures. Even caught some reds on top with a Spit-N-Image. Riverside grubs and H&H cocahoes in Chrt and Purple are best. But we caught em' on everything from Shad-Raps to Spinnerbaits! Still waiting for the river to go back down and catch those tailing reds again on the flats. Still some dates left in July and August. Call for details! Catch Em Up!! 504-677-8420 Capt. TIM URSIN Website: ESCAPE CHARTERS Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: SHELL BEACH, LA. Time: 1998-07-03 21:57:55 Comments: The fishing still remains great in the Breton Sound, Bay Eloi and rocks areas. Trout are mixed(13 to 20 ins.)but when located they are actively feeding. Best baits are live shrimp, croakers and once you really get them going the chartruse or clear beetle or shrimp tail will put a few in the boat. Deep corks have been working well on the slower running tides and a free line on the stronger running tides. The sand flies have also been biting so bring bug spray.Pretty soon I will be heading over to the Battledore area, this is the month they start showing up in force. I still have a few dates open at the end of July, if you would like to make a trip give me a call. MAKE THE GREAT ESCAPE WITH CAPT. HOOK OUT OF CAMPO'S MARINA, SHELL BEACH. |

Caught 4 Black Tip Sharks, on cut mullet, one close to 4 feet. Killed and cleaned one of them and fried him up! Delicious! After the Sharks, I didn't feel like fishing for Trout, so I didn't catch any! But the water was dirty. The tide moved all day both days, with the low tide in the late after noon, to early evening. Had a blast! If you haven't eaten a black tip, you've got to try it. Surf Fishing Team Website: Bertaut Sports Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: New Orleans Time: 1998-07-01 04:50:07 Comments: The La Surf Fishing Team, fished Fourchon Public Beach Today (Tuesday)!!!! The waves were not that bad, but the water was very muddy again, when we got there (7:00 am) the water looked decent until I got all our gear set up, then the muddy "breaking surf" zone spread out!! The range was so low, the good water never did come in!! Well, I put one big rod out (12 ft), I blew up the 11 ft rod at the center radius bend when I loaded it on a cast with a 6oz pyramid and a chunk of mullet this morning! We put 3 crab nets on rod holders like last week!! I just finished boiling the crabs (over 3 dozen keepers) with corn on the cob and small red potatoes! I also caught a Flounder (castnet), a Gafftop Sailcat, a small Blacktip Shark, and I caught a nice Tope Shark (inedible but a nice ride) about 30-35 pounds. Two breakoffs bit through 90 pound seven strand mono coated wire leaders. Broke that rod, and gave the fish gods a lot of terminal tackle today!! The crabs and fish were caught on mullet that I caught right on the beach in the surf!! The surf is loaded with mullet and crabs! There are many Flounder there too, we caught them in the castnet last week too!! I will have some photos from today in the "Fishing Photos" section tomorrow evening! Click at the bottom of the Photo Index to see the latest photos!! Fish Forever, BOB!! |

Beard Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Time: 1998-06-30 13:44:39 Comments: I went down to Fourchon yesterday afternoon to try some surf fishing. I fished at the east end of the beach across from Elmer's Island. The water was rough and muddy, but everyone fishing around there caught a few fish. I was using live mullet, another group was using live shrimp, and another was using plastic cocahoes. The guys with the cocahoes seemed to do the best. I saw them land a couple of flounder and a few trout. There was a guy in a boat just beyond where the waves were breaking. It seemed like every time I looked over at him, he was landing a fish - probably trout. He also caught a large fish (+10 lb.) that he released. Probably something inedible. Well it seems like there are plenty of fish along the beach. If the water calms down, the fishing should be great. Good luck fishing!!! |

From: Venice Time: 1998-06-28 01:53:19 Comments: PLENTY of reds to be caught if you know where to look and don't mind getting wet. I had Jesse Burkes and seven of his buddies down from Arkansas. They fished with me last year and caught limits of specks and reds, so they were pretty pumped up to do the same this year. Well, no problem with the Redfish, but the trout were few and far between. With 30+ MPH winds since Wednesday, we were not able to get to the rigs that I know are holding those big Specks. We did go to Battledore Thursday, but after 2 BIG Squalls, we took a serious whippin' coming back in. My 21' Hydra-Sports Bay Skiff rides great, but not in a 4 ft. Chop! Anyway, came back in to one of my Redfish holes and limited out in both boats. We released 20 or so, as well. Yesterday, we went strictly for Reds and limited out in all three boats. Just goes to show, even with horrible weather, we can usually find a protected spot to fish in Venice. Today, however, was too nasty, and I cancelled until Tuesday. At 5:30 a.m., we had driving rains and 50 MPH winds. NO FUN!! The reds were taken on Bass Assassin plastics tipped with a little piece of shrimp, and the 20 or so Trout we caught were on Chrt Beetles. I'll post another report on Wed. and hopefully this tropical mess in the Gulf will be outta here, so I can get back on the trout! Catch Em' Up!!! Venice Charters Unl. 504-677-8420 Capt. The water looked horrible, and there where white Caps as far as you could see. I didn't even stop to wet a line. There were some big squalls out a couple of miles so I reckon thats what was causing all the ruccus. Just my luck lately. Time: 1998-06-26 16:04:04 Comments: Another fantastic 10 days in Breton Sound, the trout were very active and hitting the live shrimp non the first pass. Deep corks worked best, 5 to 6 ft., and once they got started, the free line was easier to work with keeping the corks out of everybodys way. Mixed trout at some spots , but overall they ranged from 1 to 3 lbs. with an occasional 4 pounder mixed in. We've been using live shrimp but croakers will do just as well. It's time to start keeping an eye on the weather so be creful there is lot of wind in these storms. From: Venice Time: 1998-06-23 13:58:32 Comments: VENICE CHARTERS UNLIMITED Venice Fishing Report: The inland fishing is getting ready to explode again in Venice. The river is down below 8 ft. in New Orleans and that means the Reds and Specks will soon be in their low river spots. Right now, they are moving. Ive even caught a few Reds on the sandbars at the ends of the passes. Look for them to be tailing in less than 1 ft. of water. Still catching plenty of small trout over around Black Bay with the bigger fish offshore now. The Islands are producing some great catches, and the Central rig is good at night. Live croakers during the day, but at night, theyll hit plastic. Ive been using a Spit-N-Image topwater and the legendary Spook early in the morning. Those big trout really blow up on these lures. Also, try some Slug-O type baits, like the soft plastics by Bass Assassin, when the trout get finicky. Pearl/ Black seems to be best. REDFISH still at all the passes. Shrimp on a 3/8 oz jighead will get em there. Plenty of reds at the 100 ft . rigs in the Delta, too, if you can get past the triggers and Sheephead. Book now for the fabulous Fall Fishing in Venice. Now booking days in August, Sept., and October. Ask about our incredible duck hunting, too! Catch em UP!! Fernando Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Time: 1998-06-16 08:02:46 Comments: With reference to your pictures of dead fish which have washed up on shore, could you be more specific about how often this occurs and where? When I lived in Cleveland, the local (Lake Eire) beaches in the spring and fall would have thousands of small fish wash up dead, with some larger ones as well. I asked one of the specialists at the natural history mueseum and his explanation was that the fish were generally exotics not capable of living through the winter that had been brought in through the bilges of ships comming from the St. Lawrence seaway. During the summer however, they breed prolifically, and some of them find the warm-water discharges of the nuke power plants. In these pockets of warm water, the exotics could survive, but when storms came up many of them get pushed into the general lake where they die, causing them to wash up on the beech. Maybe you're seeing a similar salt water condition? Just an alternate explanation (that's probably wrong, I'm an aerospace engineering student, not a biologist) -Tony |

TIM URSIN SR. / ESCAPE CHARTERS Website: ESCAPE CHARTERS Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: SHELL BEACH, LA. Time: 1998-06-15 21:33:09 Comments: Have been trying to limit my fishing reports to weekly because basicly the way to fish and the places to fish are the same and in the last eight trips we did very well on specks in Breton Sound. With the exception of the weather which can change your fishing in open water and send you into the marsh very quickly but this year the marshes are still holding some nice size trout and are full of good eating size Redfish, so don't be afraid to explore the possibalities. In situations where you have hard southerly winds blowing water in and filling the marshes, this is probably the best time to look for trout back in the ponds since the bait is also being pushed into there and when your fishing live shrimp a trout will never know the difference. Redfish will also be in the ponds, but when the water level reaches the grass, the reds tend to go rooting in the flooded grass around the ponds in search of crabs and snails hiding there. How many times have you been in a pond on an above normal tide and back in the marsh grass you hear this pop and a splash, but you just can't get that far back to make a cast, well Mr Redfish is doing a little exploring on his own and if you wait long enough he will come out and you'll get a shot at him. On falling tide situations the opposite is true, you should fish the shoreline of the ponds and any drain off comming from it, and on extremely low tides the reds will pull back to the deeper connecting bayous. The trout on the other hand will tend to school up at the mouths of the biggest and main bayous that drain all these ponds as long as the tide is falling. Because you can't get to the bigger trout, don't loose confidence you can still catch fish, you just have to change your tactics, thats why it's called fishing. On the good days the bigger trout are calling so get them while you can, but if conditions change you still know you have a good chance to put a few in the ice chest, so good fishing and be prepared to change if you have to.....CAPT. TIM URSIN SR. out of CAMPO'S MARINA in SHELL BEACH, LA. DON'T FORGET...GIFT CERTIFICATES MAKE GREAT GIFTS...GIVE THAT SOMEONE SPECIAL A FISHING TRIP WITH ESCAPE FISHING CHARTERS. |

Capt Hooks had 3 charters over the last week and has been burning up the fish. Limits since friday, a.m. and p.m. on Redfish. Most about 20-21 inches but some went 36 inches. Trout mostly 12/13 inches under the birds in the open bays (Bay Gardene and Cox Bay). Some very large though. Reds hitting on live shrimp, or even dead shrimp when thick. Trout hitting on green and clear sparkle beatles under a cork or without. For the first time in many years small puppy (black)drum have returned as well as sheepshead. The ban on gill nets has made a difference in our opinion. Great time of the year to be in south Louisiana. CaptHooks |

From: Venice Time: 1998-06-10 22:56:59 Comments: Despite the 20 knot winds weve had in Venice the last 4 or 5 days, Ive still been able to put my customers on limits of Reds and plenty of trout. The offshore report, however is not nearly as good. 6-8 foot seas have been the norm since Saturday, and the Bluewater seems to be closer to Mexico than South Pass. This is unusual, as June has always been the best month for us to fish Bluewater. It should make for an interesting New Orleans Invitational Tournament, which starts tomorrow. Back to the inland report, look for reds in the shallow ponds up around Coquette, Scofield, and English Bay. Also, plenty of reds at SW Pass, if you can get there. Shrimp colored cocahoes and Blk/Chrt has been hot. The old green Beetle continues to catch fish, too. I still have some dates open for July, so call and ask about my 2 day special. In appreciation of the estimated 898,000 plus anglers in the state, a recreational fishing license will not be required to celebrate the occasion when dropping a line the weekend of June 6-7. During this weekend residents and nonresidents may exercise the privileges of a licensed recreational fisherman for free. Sportfishing is enjoyed by more than 60 million Americans of all ages. Millions of dollars are spent each year on licenses, taxes and fees, providing funding for federal and state programs that contribute significantly to the preservation and protection of our natural environment. Fishing is a sport that anyone can enjoy. "Fishing week" will provide an excellent opportunity to introduce additional individuals to this wholesome outdoor activity. Big Lake will have 2 to 3 foot seas and white caps all over the lake. My suggestion would be to try up the ship channel around the LNG plant. Some friends went up there today and caught a box full of 12 to 15 inch specks, a bunch of rat reds, 4 flounder, and a real big sheep head. The surf is terrible, and the usual fishing holes in Big Lake will be real rough. I'm gonna stay home unless the winds die down real soon. Good Luck |

From: Venice Time: 1998-06-02 20:02:53 Comments: VENICE REPORT REDFISH- We are catching lots of Reds in the 5-10 pound range. Best bet is find clear water down river in the ponds and throw spinners. I had Ray Lucas and his wife Sherry, down from Chicago yesterday. They caught and released over 50 redfish in only a couple of hours. We started out with shrimp under a cork and switched to spinnerbaits. Also had 25 trout mixed in. The 5 days before that I had Hershel Snyder and a group of his buddys from Arkansas and Tennessee. They all limited on reds and most had limits of trout as well. We had four boats out and everyone had a good time. SPECKS- Talked to Gordon Anderson, from Hammond. He and a buddy had some big, beautiful trout. One weighed 9.11, and two more were over six. The 9.11 will probably win the STAR tournament trout division for this area. Thats a big trout. They caught it on a Cordell Spot, made by PRADCO. Most of the bigger fish Ive caught in the last week came on a H&H Cocahoe or Beetle under a popping cork. But, Ive caught a few real hogs on a Swim-N-Image and a Bomber Mullet. Purple/Chrt is still best for the cocahoes. Some big trout out at the rigs around Battledore, but they will only hit live bait. This weekend should be great and there should be some 9-10 pound trout caught out of Venice. I have one boat available for Saturday, if you want to get in on the action. Till next week! Capt. Time: 1998-05-28 02:39:34 Comments: With the weather cooperating, the last seven days fishing in Breton Sound has been great. The trout are actively feeding on shrimp and are hitting like a freight train, the majority of our success came using a 3/8 oz. sliding sinker rig with live shrimp. After reaching the bottom,a slow steady retrieve was the most successful technique to trigger a strike. the trout are out there so don't miss the action in Breton Sound, if you would like to make a trip, call or e-mail.....CAPT. From: Baton Rouge Time: 1998-05-27 02:40:03 Comments: I've been fishing out of the Port Sulfur,Empire/Buras areas lately.Someone told me there a backdown ramp/launch just on the other side of the Empire bridge.Does anyone know or where it is?? I've used Delta Marine's hoist which is very nice ,but they close a little earlier than I like for night fishing. I've also used Joshua's in Buras but it is more difficult to wind thru the marsh to get to the "secret" spot at a couple of the passes on the Gulf.(with the other 20-boats).I feel a good case of "yellow mouth" fever coming on and will post a report later!!! Good fishing to all!!! |

Large Trout are biting live shrimp and cocahoes suspended off the bottom. Bull reds will be a bonus! Look for a reasonable current in clear water and hang on. Best depths seem to be ~10-20 ft. Good Luck |

Surf Fishing Team Website: Louisiana Fishing Magazine Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: New Orleans Time: 1998-05-24 05:02:50 Comments: About a mile of fences were installed during the week at Fourchon Public Beach! They are "Sand Trap" fences that catch sand and rebuild the dunes back from the beach! There are several different groups that put this together! There were hundreds of people camping (literally), many tents and RV's, people fishing and swimming, enjoying the holiday weekend! Even boats and trailers that were beach launched! There were reporters and officials during the week, so watch for the upcoming article in the Times-Picayune this week! Trout were caught in the surf every morning this week, the wind came back and blew us away today! Surf conditions look worse for tomorrow! Fish Forever, BOB!! |

Time: 1998-05-20 16:17:48 Comments: Fished from Johnson Bayou back to Constance Beach from 3:00 till about 5:30 and caught 2 nice specks. Fished with Terry Shaunessy for a little while. I met with a man who showed me an ice chest full of real nice specks, one was about 6 pounds. Terry told me that they had caught there limits yesterday evening. I caught my two wading around the rocks at Constance Beach, which is just west of Holly Beach. I caught mine on an ajusta-floater from D.O.A. Had a great time, just wish I would have gotten there earlier. Dog |
