Comments: I was an avid fisherman until I decided to get away from New Orleans problems by taking a job transfer to St. Louis 4 yrs and counting now. I use to fish every week and had a couple of boats, 21ft Reno Skiff and a 14ft whaler. I miss home, family, and friends. The food here sucks but we still manage to cook all our Louisana favorites. I miss the fishing most of all I still get to go a couple of times a year and never miss the Tarpon Rodeo. I use to spend many hours surf fishing at Fouchon. Thanks for the memories

Comments: Finally back in action after 5 days at the Dome, fished with Stuart Fourroux and his group. Headed down towards Hopedale and some clean water and got into some beautiful specks on live cocaho's under a cork. Fished the upper shoreline of Lake Machias and caught specks from 2 to 4 lbs., the bigger the minnow, the bigger the trout, the action was slow but with trout that size it was worth the wait. Final tally, 33 specks,a red and 2 flounders. It sure felt good speck chasing again..............HOOK....... ON SITE OVERNITE ACCOMMODATIONS, FOR UP TO 8 PERSONS, WILL BE AVALIABLE AFTER APRIL 1, SO DON'T MISS THE FALL AND SUMMER ACTION, BOOK YOUR TRIP EARLY. Comments: VENICE CHARTERS UNLIMITED - Fishing report 3-8-99 Well, after the windfinally switched out of the NW, I was able to get down river to a spot I’vebeen wanting to fish. The wind Monday still blew 30 knots most of the day,but we smoked the Reds. Our results for Monday(3-15) were: 40 + redfishup to 30 pounds(released most), a couple of Mangrove Snapper and Grouper, and a bunch of Black Drum and Bull Croaker. Today, Tuesday, we had 35 orso Reds up to 15 pounds and a box full of Specks, drum, snapper, etc... Bait:Chart. H&H Cocahoe, 3/8 oz. Jighead. Don’t let the wind scare you offguys, you just have to “fish where they live”! Booking boats 2 and 3 forMay/June big trout bite. Call 225-677-8420 or E-mail me for dates andavailability. I can handle parties up to 20! Come see us at the SportsmansShow in the Dome. I’ll be at the Venice Marina booth. Capt. Brent Roy

This is becoming a lost skill, even though I live on the shores of The Chesapeake Bay, where fishermen abound. All the nets I have seen in years are commercial woven nets. I'm an old-timer, and would like to be able to teach some youngsters how to tie the knots, etc. and make a net from scratch. Any advice or help? Comments: VENICE CHARTERS UNLIMITED - Fishing report 3-8-99. The fishing thisweekend was probably the best, so far, for 1999. Saturdays forecast for windsof 20-25 knots had me a little concerned. What a great feeling to wake up to5 knot South winds instead. We hammered the trout!! Ended up with close to100 Specks. All good fish. Four or five were close to 5 lb., with one weighing5.2. Add to that 15 Reds and a handful of flounder, and you’ve got a mess offish. The trout and reds were eating purple/chrt cocahoes and chrt/ riversidegrubs. With or without a cork. It didn’t matter. The fish are moving towardsthe beach! The flounder took a little coaxing. 1/2 a shrimp on the jig did thetrick. Sunday, the front came through and the North East wind blew 25 knots. The beauty of Venice is, it’s such a large area, I can always find someplaceprotected that’s holding fish. Under just about any conditions. I teamed upwith Capt. Bobby and we went down river and got up in the canes. It was notas fast as Saturday, but we found clean water and caught our Redfish, with afew BIG trout mixed in. Looks like a great trout year. If you want a shot at atrophy trout for the wall, this April, May, and June would be an excellent timeto come down. Call 225-677-8420 or E-mail me for dates and availability. Ican handle parties up to 20! I’ll be at Bayou Specialties on River Rd. Tuesdaynite(6 P.M.) talking about some of my tricks for Big Venice Speckled Trout!See ya there! Capt. Brent Roy

Comments: Cancelled my charter for today(wind was howling), but went down to the BEACH to install a set of hydraulic trim tabs on my 25 ft. Privateer(I've been wanting to do this for 5 years). The installation was very simple, and I really needed them as my charters always seem to want to sit to one side of the boat when I'm underway, and now I can control the attitude of the boat, without asking them to move around. This is a big plus for any boat over 22 ft. for attitude control or bow control when running in rough sea's. Also while I was down I checked on how the lodge was comming along, we should be ready for April 1 as planned. Thanks for the e-mails about the lodge, I hope I answered all your questions on rates and availability and location, number of guests etc. Anyone else have any questions please e-mail or call me. Comments: We fished the public beach at Port Fourchon today, got one nice redfish and many catfish! Also got photos of Mr. Mike LaFleur with some trout he caught on his flyrod! We see him weekly in many places with fish he caught on flys he makes himself. We saw no security guard on the public road the Commission just graded down to the beach again this week right where the watchman was parked last week! Great road job as always! Just got an e-mail from the Port Fourchon Harbor Police Dept. that said the New Commission Port facility is open, it is only 3 miles from the beach on A.O. Rappelet Road, he said the new phone number is 504-396-3911 and the facility has police there 24 hours a day. The beautiful elevated on concrete pile building looks like the safest place to be in the event of a tropical storm for miles. Fish Forever, Bob Bertaut Sr.

We headed for some deep bayous just North of Stump Lagoon where we drifted throwing chartruse beetles on 1/4 oz. jig heads trout but also quite a few throw backs, and after three half miledrifts we ended up with 35 specks 12 to 16 in. and a red and a drum. Comments: Went out today with Bob De Silva and Bob Jr., they are from Baton Rougebut have a beautiful camp at Proctors Landing at Shell Beach. He wanted me to guide him in one of his boats, so we headed out in the 20 ft. custom Reno Skiff to fish lures in the inside marshes around Shell Beach. We fished a bayou off the Ship Channel and as we drifted with the falling tide, we picked up 8 keepers and about 8 throwbacks and at the end of the drift the tide was slowing but the wind was starting to lay down, so we decided to head for Bay Eloi. And low and behold, just before entering the bay the prop spun it's hub, we were 17 miles out and could only do 5 mph, but I really got to view the marsh like I never have before. After about 3 1/2 hours we pulledup to Bob's camp at about 2:30 pm and there sat the 25 ft. Grady White, what the heck, we loaded it up and headed for Bay Eloi, better late than never right, well never won out in this case, we made 5 stops and didn't get a bite. THATS WHY THEY CALL IT FISHING, but it sure was a beautiful day to be out on the water. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES...............Capt. Hook......Escape Charters

Comments: Hey Mr. Bob, I can not believe that Caillouet Land Co. is telling people that they can't go on the beach to fish, swim, crab, camp, or enjoy themselves. I am 16yrs. old and I love to fish. I have been down to Fourchon's free public beach a couple of times and I have caught a couple of nice reds and some nice trout. I hope that the state can stop the Caillouet Land Co. from prohibiting people from using the free public beach. I hope that the beach stays open because I plan on fishing from the beach for years to come. I don't want to see the beach get blocked from public access because the beach is a good place for a father to spend time with his children, I had a great time going down to Fourchon with my dad and spending the day with him because he works alot and we don't get to spend alot of father-son time together. I hope to be able to go down to the beach with my dad and be able to spend some time with him. I think more fathers should go and do outdoor recreational activities with their children. I hope that the beach stays open. Good luck I am behind you 150%!! I want to see the beach stay open. Good luck and Good fishing!!

We did go past the guard to the east end anyway, caught one big redfish, they were in a blue crab mood, no tide range and wind did not help either! Lost 3 big ones using small whole crabs for bait, I guess they bite the crab and crush it and miss the hook, only landed and released one that had been downtown for carnival! Pictures are on there way! I was accompanied by my Brother in law from Houma, LA. He's put me on the fish in Cocodrie, and Paunt-au-Chien many times. I was glad to be able to return the favor. Hey Bob, I caught them on cracked crab. Nothing would hit the finger mullet. Some guys down the beach caught a few Big reds early, but they stopped once the surf got too rough. Dog

Mr. Macaluso, accompanied by his son Chris Macaluso, andKevin Ford(LSU Sports Announcer), got a first hand look at what anawesome and diverse place the Mississippi River Delta is! We started offdown river, where I had been on some nice Reds, but quickly switched overto plan B upon finding the waters around South Pass muddy and rough. After heading back up and eating a quick lunch on my houseboat at theVenice Marina, we headed for the vast marsh North of Venice. There, wefound crystal clear water and hungry Redfish! We caught 30+ on purple/white Riverside plastics and spinner baits. Wednesday was evenbetter. My customers quickly added 25 beautiful trout to our limit of Reds.Spinners were best. Looks like the fish are already going into a Springtimepattern and Venice fishing should be Excellent in the coming months. Comedown and experience the Mississippi River Delta for yourself! Comments: Fished today with Dr. Curtis Smith and his wife Sonja of Mobile, and after the last few days of reading the fishing reports, I left the dock a little apprehensive, but 20 minutes later I felt a lot better when at our first stop we caught 8 nice trout. We bounced around for a couple of hours as the water was falling hard and the tide was dead low, picking up a few trout here and there. Decided to run to the East shoreline of Lake Borgne and fish the rising tide in Padre, and it paid off, drifting with the tide against the wind we started catching trout consistantly fishing slow on the bottom with the Manns Swimmin Grub on a 1/4 oz. jig head. Ended up keeping 25 nice trout and releasing about 15 more. The trout seem to be more aggressive on the rising tide, and we only fished it for an hour as they had to head back to Mobile early. Great weather today, hope it holds, I'll be fishing the rest of the week....IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A QUALITY AND FUN FISHING TRIP, GIVE ME A CALL AT (504) 643 5905...CAPT. HOOK

Comments: There is something I've always been curious about - When you're out on the beach at Fourchon, you can look out and see a good number of rigs. I was wondering if anyone knew about how far off the beach they are, if anyone fishes those rigs, and what would be the smallest boat safe enough to go out that far - sometimes I've seen bassboats cruising along the beach and then take a sharp turn south.

Comments: Took Capt. Hil Wagener and his cousin Dave to do a little scouting deep in the Biloxi Marsh and we came upon some bayous with 6 to 10 feet of water. Have you ever pulled into an area and said to yourself, this is the spot, we can't miss and it turns out to be a futile effort, well this turned out to be THE SPOT. Started out drifting and casting and picked up a few, so we changed to slow trolling and that did the trick, sometimes having 3 on at a time. We were out there for about 3 hours and the best thing about it was that we didn't see a boat the whole time, can you imagine having a whole area to yourself. Ended up with 57 trout with only a few throwbacks, the best baits trolling were the chartruse queen cocaho and the pink Manns swimming grub, all on a 1/4 oz. jig head, slow trolled just bumping the bottom. Not all the trout are shallow, so don't give up on the bayous yet, you may not get bites fast but they hit it like a freight train. We had a great time, some great fun and some fantastic video tape action to keep the memories alive.............CAPT. HOOK...(504) 643 5905.

Comments: Ok, It's official. I landed my first Bull Red at the beach today. What a rush!!! He was huge, over 45 inches. Didn't have a scale to weigh him. I did it just like Mr. Bertaut details on this page. Thanks a Million Bob!!!! Caught him on finger mullet in the surf at Johnson Bayou. Lots of fish caught today, up and down the beach. I got 3 hook-ups but only landed the one. The birds were working right off the surf too, but I only brought my big surf gear. If I would have brought my lighter tackle, I might have been able to catch some trout too. But, I had my mind set on Mr. Bull Red. Great day to be a Louisianian!!!!

Comments: VENICE CHARTERS UNLIMITED-Venice, LA Fishing Report. The pastweek has been some of the best fishing I can remember, in late January andearly Feb. Fished 5 days and each one was better than the last. We hadcatches of 70-100 trout, including some 3 pounders yesterday. We started offfishing Reds in the duck ponds. With high water, and a strong falling tide, Iknew we were in for some great fishing. Once. we arrived in the pond, Icould see the reds tailing and exploding on the surface, all around us. Wecaught our 4 man limit in 30 minutes on spinnerbaits and Spit-n-Images. Agold spoon also worked well. We released 10-15 and headed for the trout. Ipulled up on a flat that I had caught some nice Specks on Sunday andMonday and we caught 69, all 15-22 inches! Tons of fun on light tackle.Purple/chrt. and purple/white H&H Cocahoes were the ticket. Look for thisaction to improve as the fish begin moving towards the beach. The oysterreefs will be holding lots of fish in the next few months. Come see me at theN.O. Boat Show, Feb. 24-28. I’ll be in the Shimano/Lowrance Booth in theSuperdome.

Comments: Today was a BRETON SOUND fisherman's dream. Because of all the warm weather we've been having I asked Kenny Campo Jr. and Capt. Hil Wagener yesterday if they wanted to go with me out to the Sound today to see if we could locate some trout who thought Spring had sprung. After about a 45 min. run we pulled down at a small rig in Bay Eloi, the water was green and clear, so I tied on a silver 52ms Mirrolure and casted, and with a slow steady retrieve, I got about 4 turns on the reel and WHAM, a beautiful 2 1/2 lb trout, the next 5 casts 5 more nice trout and when I turned around Kenny and Hil were changing their plastic baits for silver rattle traps, and thats when the fun began, 2 and sometimes 3 on at a time. The action was non stop up until we reached our 75 trout limit, oh and there was that one 10 lb. Red that almost crushed Capt. Hil's rattle trap, no throw backs today but the best part about the whole trip, it was video taped. Whether it be February or May, spring surely sprung today............Capt. Comments: I enjoyed your louisiana fishing website tremendously, especially the pictures taken surf fishing Fourchon beach, my family has a camp in GRAND ISLE, and we fish fourchon often, during the summer. I am also a shark enthusiast, in fact I have a large saltwater aquarium in my house in Marrero with a leopard shark and a banded shark. First of all I was wondering what time of year is best for catching blacktip sharks, and at what end of the beach. I enjoy catching and releasing all sharks, because we always have plenty of specks and reds to keep our freezer full and it isnt necessary for us to keep them. I was also wondering if their was anyone out there with the means of keep a shark under 20 inches in length alive, after catching it in the gulf. I would be willing to pay for these services. I thank you for your time, and ask you to respond with any information. sincerely, GABE JOHNSON--------Student at nicholls state.

Comments: We fished the beach a Port Fourchon, caught and released a Tope Shark, Twice! The second time 30 minutes later he came in with a big Remora (suckerfish) he did not have the first time in! When hooked he jumped repeatedly both times, most of the Tope sharks do. Wasted the day and fresh bait that was scarce and hard to catch feeding the hardhead catfish, every cast lost a mullet and got a hardhead, stopped counting at 2 dozen and left early. Saw two dead Dolphin's and two dead Loggerhead Turtles, probably net victims since they all showed up at the same time. Fish Forever, Bob & Bobby!!

Had Charlie from Charlie's Barber Shop in Slidell and could only manage to put 21 trout and a flounder in the boat. Fished hard for 4 hours, but the bites were few and far between, the fish were cought on chartruse worms and beetles. Tried slow trolling and casting while drifting, couldn't do anything right today, would like to have fished the tide in the early afternoon but Charlie had to be back in for noon, as he had a date with some carpet. If your going to Shell Beach, go in the late morning , early afternoon and catch the change in tide...........Capt. Hook

We are finding Specks up to 4 lbs. using Purple/chrt Tails and Chrt/red . Look for the trout to move onto the flats around midday, as it warms up. Use Excalibur Swim-n-Image or Mirrolures Top Dog, if they want it on top! My customers Tuesday, Mr. Lee and Mr. Tucker, both from Baton Rouge, added a fine limit of Redfish to the bag, Tuesday. The reds were in 3-8 ft. of water, on the bottom, using a jig tipped with Shrimp. I am extending my FREE LODGING SPECIAL through February. 3-4 people can FISH with me for $99 each and stay for FREE. You can't beat it! All you need to bring is a SMILE! I'm also booking large CORPORATE CHARTERS right now(6-20 people) Book these early! Call me at 225-677-8420 or E-Mail BROY3553@aol.com to make RESERVATIONS! See ya next week. Capt. Brent Roy

Comments: A friend and I took advantage of Capt. Brent Roy of Venice Marina's January special, and boy can I say we were not disappointed. Picked up about 25 trout, with one or two throwbacks, and limited out on reds and left them biting. Capt. Roy's got it all together, his house boat accomodations make the trip much easier. Thanks for a great trip. Alex ****Hi! Alex!! Nice Job!!, I posted a link to his web site above! ****

Comments: A very interesting article. I am looking for a cast net to catch Sandeels from a boat. Sandeels are a small thin baitfish about the size of a pencil so the mesh size will have to be very fine. Do you know where I can buy a complete net or get the materials to make one myself. I have not seen them for sale in England, are there places in the USA that sell them mail order? regards, Mark

Comments: Fished yesterday with Dan Fischer and two of his clients, and after a cold boat ride to our first fishing spot I pulled back on the throttle of my 225 Mariner Offshore only to be greeted by the snap of my shift cable, oh boy what a day this is going to be shifting this baby by hand. Not deterrred, I pulled up to the bank in a sharp turn with 20 feet of water and we proceeded to cast our Cotton Candy French Fries on 1/4 oz. jig heads and letting them settle to the bottom slowly working them back to the boat keeping contact with the bottom. Every throw was either a trout or a hit, the bad news was only 1 in 15 were keepers. I decided to try another area, and knowing it would be a 20 minute cold boat ride, I got the ok from my gang and we headed for our next and last stop, by then it was late morning and the Sun was high in the sky, so I pulled down in about 6 to 9 ft. of water in a narrow pass I like to fish off of lake Robin and down went the trolling motor. The first 5 casts, 5 nice keeper trout, so we continued this for about an hour and a half and settling for 50 nice trout(1 1/2 to 3 lbs.) and catching and releasing another 15 or 20 keepers. We had all the fish we needed and headed back for the BEACH and Campo's Marina and some hot coffee. Needless to say, the chill factor yesterday during the boat ride was close to zero, so make sure you wear layered clothes and face protection. The fishing is steady right now and if you can brave the cold and want to make a quality fishing trip, give me a call.......CAPT. HOOK.....(504) 643 5905.

Comments: Nice pictures, but did you leave any fish in the water? Whats the story with the Nissan truck? **** Hi! Alan, I let all the big fish go, 4-5 a day sometimes! that is over 1,000 pounds of Redfish a year and I am not exagerating one pound! Did you ever get any fish from the water? The story on the truck: We surf fish weekly and have watched this truck dissapear in less than a year! A couple got stuck and started walking out one evening, (6 miles down the beach) the harbor police picked them up and gave them a ride. That night and all the next day a storm and wind driven high tide buried it so deep nothing could get it out! The high waves and surf actually turned it while submerged before the final burial the next weekend!

Comments: Was looking for pirogues and found Mr. Duet. Called him on the phone several times to set up a purchase. Ordered 4-14', sent him a check before Thanksgiving and he was worried that he would not be able to get the boats done before Thanksgiving (I figured that it would take him at least two months to get them done) because he had come down with the flu. Talked to he and his wife several times over the course of the month of November and set up a trip to N.O. to pick up a Ryder truck and drive down to Galliano and pick up the boats. When we got there, he had 5-14' done and a couple of 12's and was working on a repair for Bubby Brister. We picked up 5-14' boats. The most beautiful handwork I've seen in a long time. We had coffee and talked for a couple of hours. I'm telling you all this because this was, without a doubt, the most pleasant experience I've had in a long time. Craftsmanship and pride in ones work is getting more difficult to find - not to mention two of the nicest people in LA. Thanks for the link.
