This trip, July 26, was not very good, I only caught about 2 dozen fish with 9 or 10 nice keepers though! Bluefish and Speckled Trout! I also caught and released 9 sparkling chrome ribbon fish!

The other half on THE "RangaTang" Surf Fishing Team is my 8 year old son, he is the official team sand castle builder, kite flier, sandbar swimmer, beachcomber, and snowball eater! Well, the snowball stand is closed at night too!! ( Megan's Snow Ball's, Ice Cream and Miniature Golf in the middle of Grand Isle on La1)

So when you see these fish counts they are all caught by only one person fishing!

In the daylight when you drive the beach you look for the Beautiful Light Green Water at whatever point it is closest to the beach! You cannot do this at night! Then you go through the first trough, usually not that deep except some are slippery! If you feel the tide washing sand out from around your feet DO NOT go out! The tide is too swift and many have drowned not using common sense! Fish from the Beach!! Also, you might catch a delicious Pompano in this first trough, they ambush their favorite bait, sand crabs as they get swept back in when the waves return from the beach!

Once you are out just past the first sandbar you should cast out as far as you can! The "Fun Game Fish" are out in the good water!! I use a light long spinning rod with 10 pound test line! I use a 30 pound test mono leader, but lost a few bull redfish feeding in the surface frenzies you sometimes are in, you can watch them roll on the bait and then take off! I keep spare line because you are in Prime Fishing Habitat and with light tackle you might get "spooled"at any time! I use a small spinning reel that is 5.2 to 1 ratio and very inexpensive, it is a Shimano TX2000! Around $25.00! at K-Mart! The other secret to feeling every move the lure makes is 10 pound (black) Berkly Fireline! You can feel the Rangatangs "Brass Sonar Ball" pinging the fish as the lure "Swims"! The line is the same Diameter as 4 lb test mono! If you cast and the rear hook is hung up on your line you can even feel this and reel in and recast!! I buy the 125 yard spool "Not Cheap" around $13-14.00! and it fills the above reel spool completely! The 6ft 6 in. #SPL1100 med. action ugly stick $29.00, at Wall Mart ,and this line is the secret to being able to cast to the rigs! You must use a simple palomar knot with this "Space Shuttle Dental Floss"line! When a fish hits he sets the hook himself and you WILL Love This Part! Nothing feels like this combination does!!

I now use 30 pound black coated braided steel leaders after losing fish on 30 lb mono! The new modern kind, is the same dia. .024", as 30 pound mono that lights up like fiber optics in the water anyway!! I test all my leaders and line on a fish weighing pull scale calibrated in pounds! The frayed 30lb mono leaders break at 8lbs! Brand new it breaks at the knots at 25lbs! By checking you also check the snap swivels, and barrel swivels at the same time!

If you drop a lure surf fishing on the sand bottom, no problem! I usually get it on the first pass with a hip mounted landing net! It will catch one of the treble hooks easily! The net I use is Eagle Claw at K-Mart for $5.99!
