Crab and Sheepshead

Gulf of Mexico Beach Fish Photos:

Mystery Crab?

I believe it is called a speckled crab and I know it is found in the Laguna Madre from Corpus Christi south. I think it is essentially the same as a blue crab with different color and markings. It may exist in other places but I don't recall seeing them in Galveston's West Bay. Submitted By: Bob Mc Bride 5-5-98

This crab is a relative of the blue crab. It is called the speckled shore crab. Its scientific nams is Arenaeus cribrarius. The USL oceanography class caught one small crab while it was down at Fourchon. It is usually only found on sandy beaches, never in bays. It is the only speckled crab with paddles that is found in the gulf. Submitted By: Robert P. Bourgeois @USL 5-12-98 USL Oceanography Class
