Boy Scout Island Treasure Surprise !

This story began when I was in Boy Scout Troop #50! Then it split in two and somehow I was then in Troop #230 with new patches and the new numbers when it formed in the early 1960's. It was a foggy sunday morning when we began to pack our tent and gear after the weekend camping trip at Boy Scout Island in City Park, New Orleans. When I got home my boy scout knife with the giant fork, spoon, coarse carved bone sides, and other attachments was gone! Forever!

So on a recent trip detecting there, I though I might find a knife, or at least a boy scout neckerchief thingy or other item like a compass or something from all the years of scouting activity there. Several large areas had a few feet of fill dirt added over the years that I remembered seeing just passing through the park over the years, so I detected the areas around the perimeter to the water line at the lagoons. What a surprise (again)!! GIRLS! I have called this island Boy Scout Island for years in error. It is really Scout Island! The only scout item I found was a brass pin with "GS" on it! Girl Scouts!! It has the old familiar design that used to be on the Girl Scout Cookie Boxes for years! They have since changed the logo! The island gave up one silver quarter from the period and some clad change!
